Sankashti Chaturthi 2021 Moonrise Time: Know Significance, Rituals & Timings Of The Festival

Bhalachandra Sankashti Chaturthi 2021 Moonrise Time today: On this day devotees of Lord Ganesha observe Chaturthi Vrat and pray to Bhalachandra Maha Ganapati form of Lord Ganesha and the Agama Peetha.

Today is observed as Chaturthi Tithi which is also known as Chaitra Krishna Paksha as per the Purnimant calendar or Chaturthi, Phalguna Krishna Paksha, as per the Amavasyant calendar. On this day devotees of Lord Ganesha observe Bhalachandra Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat and pray to Bhalachandra Maha Ganapati form of Lord Ganesha and the Agama Peetha.

Moreover, when the day falls on a Tuesday, it is widely popular as Angarki Chaturthi and believed to be the most auspicious of all the Sankashti Chaturthi days. Lord Ganesha is revered as the 'Vighneshwara' or the remover of obstacles. On this day, devotees seek blessings of Lord Ganesha to lead a hurdle free life.

On this day devotees keep fast and most poular festival observed in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Two schools of thought exist which sets the fasting rituals for Sankashti Chathurthi. The Purnimant School believe that Sankashti Chathurthi falls during the month of Magha, whereas believers from Amavasyant School consider this auspicious thithi to fall during Paush month, and hence observe the ritual on that day.

What are the rituals?

For devotees, the timing of Moonrise or Chandrodaya time is significant. Devotees observe a strict fast  while some also keep a partial fast. Devotees can eat fruits, vegetables and roots of plants. However, the staple diet on this day includes peanuts, potatoes and sabudana khichadi. Devotees offer special puja deciated to Moon or Chandra God where they offer water, chandan (sandalwood) paste, consecrated rice and flowers in the direction of moon.
