Tomato Fever Infects Over 80 Children In Kerala. Know Its Symptoms, Preventions

Tomato Fever in Kerala: It's been reported that at least 82 children below the age of five years have been infected with Tomato Flu in Kerala's Kollam district

New Delhi: Kerala is witnessing a surge in the cases of tomato fever, which has been affecting children, especially those below five years.

It has been reported that at least 82 children below the age of five years have been infected with tomato flu in Kerala's Kollam district. Cases of tomato fever have not been recorded in any of the neighbouring states as of now.

What Is Tomato Fever?

Also known as tomato flu, the disease causes rashes and blisters which are red in colour, which gives it the name, 'tomato flu' or 'tomato fever'. It is an unidentified fever particularly prevalent in children below the age of five years. Health officials in the state have warned that this would spread further if preventive measures are not taken on time.

Symptoms

High fever is more common in infected children, with red rashes and blisters seen on their skin. It also causes aches and swelling in the joints. Infected children mostly feel dehydrated and often have tiredness. Besides, cramps in the stomach, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, discolouration of hands, knees and buttocks, along with cough, sneezing and runny nose are some of the other symptoms seen in the patients. 

Preventions

If a child shows any of the above symptoms, they should consult a doctor. Infected children are advised to drink lukewarm water. They should not scratch the blisters and rashes, and always bathe with lukewarm water. Cleanliness and hygiene should be maintained around the children infected by tomato flu.
