Kerala Rains: Orange Alert In Thiruvananthapuram, Educational Institutions To Remain Shut In Some Districts

IMD issued an orange alert in Thiruvananthapuram and a yellow alert to Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts on Wednesday.

Normal life was affected in several parts of Kerala on Tuesday due to heavy rains that continued to lash the state. The heavy downpour has also resulted in the raising of water level of several rivers in the state to the dangerous mark. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alert to some of the districts in the state, reported PTI.

According to ANI, "Kerala | Holiday declared for educational institutions including professional colleges and Kendriya Vidyalayas in Thiruvananthapuram district for 4th October due to orange alert for heavy rain in the district."

The heavy rains have damaged 23 houses and destroyed crops worth Rs 43.57 lakh in Thiruvananthapuram district. On October 1, a man went missing in Vamanapuram river near Vithura Ponnamchud bridge and the district administration continued the hunt for him.

On Wednesday, IMD issued orange alert in Thiruvananthapuram and yellow alert to Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts. A yellow alert denotes heavy rainfall between 6 and 11 cm, whereas an orange alert denotes extremely heavy rain between 6 and 20 cm.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) issued an orange alert for Aruvippuram station on Neyyar river in Thiruvananthapuram as the water level there was above the danger mark. The IMD also issued yellow alert for Vellaikatav station on Karamana river (Thiruvananthapuram), Thumbaman station on Achankovil river (Pathanamthitta) and Kallupara station on Manimala river (Pathanamthitta), as reported by PTI.

The CWC also requested the people who live near these rivers to be careful.

The extreme weather pattern is anticipated to last for several more days, with the IMD forecasting widespread rain and thunderstorm activity across the state from October 3 to 5.
