Kerala Police Withdraw 'Mic Howling' Case After CM's Intervention

Earlier, Kerala police registered a case under Kerala Police Act Section 118 (e) for causing danger to the public or failure in public safety.

A day after a case was registered over the howling noise that occurred during Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan's address at the condolence meeting of former CM Oommen Chandy, Kerala police withdrew the case on the intervention of the CM on Tuesday. Earlier, the Cantonment police registered a case on the issue but did not implicate anyone in the case. The police yet recorded the statement of the microphone operator and seized the amplifier, cable and other equipment used during the program.

Kerala police registered a case under Kerala Police Act Section 118 (e) for causing danger to the public or failure in public safety.

A senior police officer told PTI, "No complaint was received about the malfunctioning of the microphone but the case was registered as per the instructions from the higher-ups."

He said that the case was registered since scientific analysis would be prepared only if the request was presented along with the case number. He also said that there was no need to create a controversy in the matter.

He said that the microphone howling was just normal and it was rectified soon. He said that he felt like laughing the first time he heard about the case.

Renjith said that it was his first such experience in his years of experience in the profession.

Renjith had provided equipment to various VVIP programmes including for former PM Manmohan Singh.

The case also led to a war of words between CPI(M) and Congress.

Meanwhile, BJP's Satheesan said, "Are you guys joking, @kerala police? You got to be proud that Kerala Police is the first force in the world to file a case against a "Mike" suo moto. Ofcourse it's a gravest violation of public order if a 10-sec technical glitch happens in the mike when @pinarayi Vijayan is speaking."
