Kerala Monsoon: Kochi Experiences Mild Shower, Cyclone Biparjoy To Intensify In Next 48 Hrs

The trawling ban is also set to begin in Kerala on June 9.

A day after monsoon kicked in Kerala after a delay especially due to Cyclone “Biparjoy”, parts of the state started experiencing mild showers on Friday. Kochi experienced light showers while the capital city Thiruvananthapuram was party cloudy on Thursday.

According to ANI, "#WATCH | Southwest #monsoon set in over Kerala yesterday, on 8th June. Visuals from Kochi, as the city receives light rainfall today."

Visuals from Thiruvananthapuram also emerged on Friday morning.

The India Meteorological Department said that the very severe cyclonic storm “Biparjoy” lay centered over eastcentral Arabian Sea. IMD said, “The very severe cyclonic storm “Biparjoy” (pronounced as “Biporjoy”) over eastcentral Arabian Sea moved slowly north-northeastwards with a speed of 4kmph during past 6-hours and lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, the 09 th June, 2023 over the same region near latitude 14.7°N and longitude 66.2°E, about 820 km west of Goa, 840 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 850 km southsouthwest of Porbandar and 1140 km south of Karachi.”

“It would intensify further gradually during next 48 hours and move nearly north-northeastwards during next 48 hour and north-northwestwards during subsequent 3 days,” the IMD said.

Trawling Ban To Begin Today

With the monsoon keeping fishermen away from the shore, another factor is also likely to add to the reason to stop fishermen from venturing into the sea. The trawling ban in Kerala is set to begin on June 9. As a result, the fishermen have no option but to stay ashore.

The Kerala government announced that the trawling ban will be in place in the state from June 9 midnight to July 31 midnight. However, the traditional fishermen who use small catamarans and non-mechanised boats will still be allowed to fish near the shore.
