Tipu Jayanti: Karnataka Police Impose Prohibitory Orders In Srirangapatna

The 18th-century ruler of the former Mysuru kingdom, Tipu Sultan is buried in Srirangapatna and every year on his birth anniversary, a steady stream of people pay their respects at his tomb.

In anticipation of Tipu Sultan Jayanti celebrations on Friday, Karnataka police imposed prohibitory orders throughout Srirangapatna taluk in Mandya district. The imposition of measures, including a curfew, was deemed a precautionary step to avoid any untoward incidents in the region, said the police. These restrictions, encompassing limitations on processions, protests, and rallies, are set to remain in effect from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Talking to PTI, a senior police officer said, "Section 144 of the CrPC which prohibits assembly of four or more persons has been clamped on the occasion like every year since it is a sensitive area."

It is also forbidden to use firecrackers, loudspeakers, banners, buntings, DJs, and other decorations, the officer stated.

They have also prohibited shouting slogans and wearing t-shirts with provocative images during this period.

The police said, "To maintain peace, law and order, safety and to protect the lives of public and public property, prohibitory orders have been imposed as a precautionary measure."

Usually, the police said that a large number of people from Mysuru and neighbouring taluks were expected during Tipu Jayanti celebrations.

So, he said, "Precautionary measures have been taken to avoid any untoward incident since it is also a sensitive area."

The 18th-century ruler of the former Mysuru kingdom is buried in Srirangapatna, and every year on his birth anniversary, a steady stream of people pay their respects at his tomb.

Last month, a procession with Tipu Sultan's image sparked violence in Karnataka. In the Eid Milad procession, four persons were injured after stones were thrown at the people taking out the procession and police.

Following this, Section 144 of CrPC was imposed as a precautionary measure in Ragigudda. Later, security was beefed up to avoid any untoward incidents.
