Karnataka Upper House Elections: Congress, BJP Bag 11 Seats Each

The tie between the two majors has given more power to HD Kumaraswamy's Janata Dal (Secular) to play a role in the decision-making of the Upper House of Karnataka.

Chennai: The ruling BJP in Karnataka bagged 11 seats just the same as Congress in the Legislative Council election for the Upper House of Karnataka Council held on Tuesday. The BJP and Congress bagged 11 each and the remaining seats were won by Janata Dal (2) and an independent candidate.

The ruling BJP fell one seat short of gaining a majority in the Karnataka Legislative Council with the election conducted for 25 seats of the total 75-seat Upper House. The biennial election was conducted on December 10 and the votes were counted on December 14.

According to the report on PTI, the tie between the two majors has given more power to HD Kumaraswamy's Janata Dal (Secular) to play a role in the decision-making of the Upper House of Karnataka.

Initially, the BJP believed in getting a majority since the party had 32 members and the mark to attain a majority was 38 members in the Council.

On the other hand, Congress had 29 members. The BJP was also concerned over Congress and JDS joining hands to achieve a majority or Congress attaining the full majority. However, both the possibilities did not take place.

After the elections, the BJP in the Upper House had 36 members while the tally slipped down to Congress to 26 members from 29 members and JDS to 10 members from 12 members.

However, the JDS won two seats including a seat that was bagged by former PM HD Deve Gowda's grandson Suraj Revanna in Hassan district.

Meanwhile, the independent candidate contested and won from one seat in Belagavi constituency.
