India Is Superpower In Terms Of Inhabitance, India Is Ahead Of China Now: African Union Chief Assoumani

African Union Chairperson Azali Assoumani held a bilateral meeting with PM Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 summit where both leaders held deliberations on ways to enhance cooperation in areas like shipping, trade, and more.

Azali Assoumani, the President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union, on Sunday elaborated on the importance of India's role in the global arena on the sidelines of the G-20 Leaders' Summit in New Delhi. He held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit where both leaders held deliberations on ways to enhance cooperation in areas like shipping, trade, and more.

Addressing a press conference, he remarked, "As we all know India is the 5th superpower in the world, so there is enough room for India in Africa. We also know that India is so powerful that it went to space. So we just need to coordinate. India is a superpower in terms of inhabitance, and now India is ahead of China."

His remark came following a historic development on Saturday wherein the African Union (AU) was granted permanent membership in the G20 grouping, marking a momentous step in the global economic landscape. Azali Assoumani lauded the decision as a significant milestone during his participation in the two-day G20 Summit which witnessed robust deliberations among world leaders.

In his presser, Azali Assoumani expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, "To my great satisfaction, admission of the African Union was approved during the G20 Summit Delhi. PM Modi and other members endorsed the accession of the African Union to this major economic decision-making body."

"The G20 Summit has just wrapped up and it was an honour for me to represent the African Union and to take part in the fruitful debate that took place throughout these two days," the African Union chief said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

Reflecting on the emotional moment when the African Union's permanent membership was announced, Azali Assoumani told news agency ANI, "I was about to cry. It was a great emotion for me. Because actually, we thought that there was going to be a debate and then a decision would be taken but at the very beginning of the Summit, it was announced that we were a member."

Earlier, PM Modi took to X and wrote about his meeting with the AU chairperson: "Had a very fruitful meeting with @PR_AZALI. Congratulated him once again on @_AfricanUnion joining the G20 family. Comoros is vital to India’s SAGAR Vision. Our deliberations included ways to enhance cooperation in areas like shipping, trade and more."

The inclusion of the African Union in the G20 signifies a step towards greater representation of the African continent in global economic discussions and decision-making. It underscores the evolving dynamics of international diplomacy and India's prominent role in shaping these developments.

As India continues to assert its position as a global superpower, its partnerships with other nations, including those in Africa, are likely to become increasingly significant in the years to come.
