India's Omicron Tally Reaches 1700, Maharashtra Reports More Than 500 Cases | State Wise List

Maharashtra's Omicron tally has surpassed the 500-mark and the state tally for the Covid variant now stands at 510 with 50 fresh cases. 

New Delhi: India witnessed a huge spike in Covid cases as the country registered 33,750 fresh infections in the last 24 hours. The country also registered a massive surge in Omicron cases and the country's overall tally for the highly transmissible strain has reached 1700.

10,846 patients recovered from the infection while 123 people succumbed to the virus on Sunday.

 Active cases: 1,45,582

Maharashtra registered a huge spike in Omicron cases on Sunday as the state recorded 50 new cases of the highly transmissible strain.  Maharashtra reported 11,877 fresh COVID-19 cases, 2,707 more than the day before, according to a PTI report. 

The state reported nine fatalities, which increased the overall COVID-19 toll to 1,41,542.

Maharashtra is now left with 42,024 active cases, according to the health bulletin released by the state. 

Covid cases in Mumbai remained a cause of concern as 7792 cases out of 11,877 were recorded in the city. 

However, as per the Mumbai civic body, the number of new cases detected in the city on Sunday was 8,063.

The Mumbai region including satellite cities and neighbouring districts reported 10,394 infections nearly 90 per cent of the total cases in the state.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data showed the city had reported 809 cases on December 27, which meant the tally jumped by almost 10 times as on Sunday.

Kerala

Kerala continued to witness an upsurge in Omicron cases as the state reported 45 new patients of Omicron variant of COVID-19 on Sunday thereby taking the total number of infections in the State to 152.

State Health Minister Veena George said nine of the 45 patients came from high-risk countries while 32 reached the State from low-risk countries. Four persons contracted the new variant through their contacts.

There are 16 cases of Omicron in Ernakulam, nine in Thiruvananthapuram, six in Thrissur, five in Pathanamthitta, three each in Alappuzha and Kozhikode, two in Malappuram, and one in Wayanad.

"One person from Thrissur and three from Alappuzha contracted the new variant through their contacts," the Health Department said in a press release.

Most Omicron-infected people came from UAE, Qatar, and the UK. Other countries include France, the Philippines, Turkey, Sweden, Kazakhstan, Ireland, Africa, Uganda, and Ukraine.

"Till now, a total of 50 people have reached the State from high-risk countries while 84 have reached from low-risk countries. Eighteen have contracted the disease through their contacts," the release said.
