Tinospora Cordifolia decoction can harm the liver

In the last two years during the Corona pandemic, the medical fraternity has emphasized increasing its immunity level to reduce the risk of Covid-19. To reduce the risk of Corona, people used all kinds of indigenous medicines. One such immunity-boosting method has been a mixture of Ayurvedic herbs.

Tinospora Cordifolia, which was deemed effective against Covid-19 infection, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for therapeutic purposes.

Tinospora Cordifolia was also included in the recommended alternative medicines to increase immunity by the Ministry of AYUSH. But, in the latest research, it has been warned that the decoction of the above can damage the liver.

What is the relation between liver health and Tinospora Cordifolia?

Tinospora Cordifolia is a herb, which is used in the preparation of Ayurvedic medicines. It contains vitamin C and minerals and is known to increase immunity levels against viral fever.

According to research published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology, drinking too much decoction of Tinospora Cordifolia can cause liver toxicity. In fact, during the pandemic, people forgot that the herb mixture was to be consumed in a balanced quantity. It is estimated that this is due to a direct or indirect process in which ancient herbs have chemical reactions or mutual effects with other medicines.

Research suggests that Tinospora Cordifolia can cause liver toxicity due to an immune response. This occurs when the body's immune system starts attacking its own cells and tissues instead of the virus or bacteria that cause the disease.

Between September and December 2020, six cases of liver damage related to Tinospora Cordifolia were seen. Patients complained of jaundice and lethargy. After extensive investigation, it was found that all the patients had used Tinospora Cordifolia decoction in the past. The biopsy report revealed that the liver damage could be related to the consumption of Tinospora Cordifolia.
