Pregnancy is a transformative journey and Ayurveda, an over 5000 years old practice, offers holistic guidance to support expecting mothers at every step. From hormonal balance to emotional well-being and postpartum recovery, Ayurvedic principles rooted in 'garbhini paricharya,' can be a powerful ally. Ayurveda with natural herbs, time-tested therapies, and mindful nutrition not only nourishes the growing foetus but also supports the mother's mental, physical, and spiritual health.

Ayurvedic Approach To Pregnancy

“Ayurveda always guides a holistic path to maternal wellness (garbhini parichaya) through mindful nutrition, natural remedies, and therapeutic practices. Herbs like Shatavari help maintain hormonal stability. In the same manner, fennel seeds, aloe vera, honey etc. support good digestion,” says Dr. Poonam Bhushan (Ayurvedacharya), Ayurvedic Physician, Baidyanath.

Ayurveda believes that a woman's body during pregnancy mirrors nature's creative power. The prenatal phase or garbhini avastha requires gentle support through a combination of diet, daily routine, and therapeutic herbs.

Danny Kumar Meena, Founder of Girlyveda, adds, “Ayurveda is not just about treating conditions; it’s about nurturing life from the very beginning. It's believed that embracing Ayurvedic principles can significantly reduce the risk of pregnancy-related issues. Today, Ayurvedic solutions, including fertility-supporting herbs and PCOS management supplements, are helping in maintaining hormonal balance and reproductive health. Pregnancy health is not just about nine months; it starts with a well-prepared body.”

Best Ayurvedic Herbs For Hormonal Balance During Pregnancy

Certain Ayurvedic herbs are especially recommended during pregnancy to regulate the hormones, reduce stress, and improve immunity.

  • Shatavari: Known as the queen of herbs, Shatavari supports estrogen balance and enhances reproductive tissue. It can also prevent preterm contractions.
  • Fennel Seeds: Fennel helps in aiding digestion, reducing bloating, and preventing acidity. Fennel seeds are also known to support lactation post-delivery.
  • Aloe Vera: Aloe vera has cooling properties that soothe the gut lining. It promotes the elimination of toxins that's crucial during early months of pregnancy.
  • Honey: Honey is a natural immunity booster that reduces nausea. When used in moderation, it can also strengthen digestion.

Ayurvedic Therapies That Prepare The Body For Birth

The key Ayurvedic therapies that support maternal wellness are Nasya and Pranayam. Nasya therapy involves applying medicated oils through the nasal passages. This gentle treatment detoxifies the head region, balances the body's doshas, and influences the reproductive system through its impact on the limbic system which governs emotions and hormones. Pranayam and gentle yoga practices on the other hand are also highly beneficial during pregnancy. Anulom Vilom and Bhramari help in enhancing the oxygen flow, reducing stress, and calming the nervous system. It reduces pregnancy-related anxiety and balances the emotions.

“Traditional therapies such as Abhyanga (oil and ghee massage) support circulation and relaxation, preparing the body and mind for healthy labour and postnatal care,” adds Dr. Bhushan.

Ayurvedic Pregnancy Diet

The digestive fire or agni tends to fluctuate during pregnancy. Ayurveda suggests warm, lightly spiced, and well-cooked meals to support digestion and fetal nourishment.

During pregnancy it's best to avoid fermented, overly spiced, reheated, or heavy foods as they might disturb the doshas. Including foods like moong dal khichdi, milk with saffron and ghee, fresh coconut water, soaked almonds, and seasonal fruits will support the pregnancy journey.

Postnatal Ayurvedic Care

Ayurvedic postnasal care or sutikaparicharya is just as important as prenatal care. Ayurveda emphasises rest, warm food, and regular abhyanga to restore strength and hormonal balance after recovery. Mothers should use herbal decoctions like jeera ajwain water to promote lactation and prevent digestive issues. Ghee-rich foods like methi laddoos or gond laddoos help in building stamina and boosting metabolism.
