India's Got Talent Gets A New Home, To Now Air On Sony TV

Sony TV has acquired the rights of 'India's Got Talent', which earlier used to air on Colors channel.

Mumbai: ‘India’s Got Talent’, which is considered one of the most popular non-fiction shows on Indian television, will now air on Sony TV. The leading GEC has acquired the rights of the reality show, which used to telecast on Colors channel since 2009. ‘IGT’ is the Indian adaptation of the prominent international format ‘Got Talent’.

Sony TV, which is airing ‘Super Dancer 4’ and ‘Indian Idol 12’, is all set to strengthen its weekend programming with the addition of ‘India’s Got Talent’. The channel will launch Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 13’ to spice up its weekday primetime in the next few months.

Unlike other reality shows which are restricted to one genre, ‘India’s Got Talent’ allowed participants to showcase their talent irrespective of their age, size, gender. From a choir group to a flautist, the show has recognized the talent of the different contestants.

“India’s Got Talent as a format holds great potential, and Sony Entertainment Television’s stronghold in the non-fiction talent-led reality show formats gives us yet another opportunity to resonate with the audience. Having acquired the rights from Fremantle, we are gearing up for an exciting new season of India’s Got Talent and we look forward to showcasing the best talent in our country,” a channel official said in a statement.

‘India’s Got Talent’ premiered on Colors channel in June 2009. The eighth season of the show ended in December 2018. It was judged by Bollywood stars like Kirron Kher, Karan Johar and Malaika Arora. Magician Javed Khan lifted the winner’s trophy of ‘IGT 8’.

Indian TV Shows That Switched Channels

Star Plus aired the first three seasons of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ before Sony bagged the rights to telecast the quiz-based show.

‘Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa’, ‘Bigg Boss’ and ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’ were originally aired on Sony TV. Colors channel acquired the rights of ‘Bigg Boss’ and ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’ during its launch in 2008. The two shows have become one of the marquee properties on the Viacom 18-owned channel.
