Soundarya Sharma Reacts To 'Housefull 5' Backlash, Says 'Great Films Are Misunderstood'
Soundarya Sharma responds to criticism over 'Housefull 5' being sexist, saying the film reflects society and every character is just a portrayal. Director Tarun Mansukhani also reacts.

Despite facing criticism for sexist humour and objectification of women, 'Housefull 5' has had a strong opening week at the box office. The film, which hit theatres on June 6, features a massive ensemble cast and boasts two different endings. One of the new entrants to the franchise, Soundarya Sharma, has addressed the backlash, urging audiences to view the film through a broader lens.
Soundarya Sharma on Housefull criticism
In a recent interview on Entertainment Live’s YouTube channel, Soundarya Sharma was asked about the film’s reception and the criticism it has received. She responded by stating that she simply portrayed the role as it was written.
“I think it depends on every individual’s perspective. I don’t mix my own vision with what my director wants me to do. The film was made on a lighter note, and everyone is just playing a character, and all these characters are a reflection of our own society.”
The actor also mentioned that the trolling around the film is contributing to its visibility.
“I am grateful for the people who are trolling the movie because that gives the film more publicity.”
'Legendary Films Are Often Misunderstood'
When asked for her personal opinion of the film, Soundarya pointed out that even some of the most iconic films have been subject to criticism.
“Not everyone will like whatever you put out there. I am sure people have certain disagreements with cult films like Baahubali and Animal, or maybe some of the old ones like Pakeezah or Guide. So I think this is just an amalgamation of opinions.”
Her take seems to suggest that public perception is highly subjective and that sometimes the audience may miss the filmmaker’s intent.
Box Office Success Vs. Online Criticism
Despite the polarised reception, 'Housefull 5' has already earned over Rs 130 crore nett in India within its first week. This makes it Akshay Kumar’s 9th-highest-grossing film to date. Director Tarun Mansukhani also weighed in on the matter, defending the film’s content.
In a statement to News18, he said, “It means that they’re watching it with a certain eye and sensibility. You can scrutinise it. That’s fine. You’ve paid money to watch it, and so you get to have an opinion on my film. It’s not a placid film about which you don’t care or have an opinion. For those who’re calling it out, I want to say that it’s your choice to see and focus on that aspect of the film.”
The film stars Soundarya Sharma, Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Sonam Bajwa, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Ranjeet, Dino Morea, Fardeen Khan, Chitrangada Singh, Johnny Lever, and Chunky Panday, making it one of the most star-studded instalments of the franchise.
