'It Was Literally A Partial OTT Release...': Kangana On Success Of 'Thalaivii' On Netflix

Kangana Ranaut starrer 'Thalaivii', which premiered on Netflix on September 25, has received an amazing response from the audience on the streaming giant.

Mumbai: Kangana Ranaut starrer ‘Thalaivii’ has managed to receive a good response from the audience upon its digital release on Netflix. The biographical drama premiered on the leading OTT platform on September 25, 15 days after its theatrical release.

‘Thalaivii’, which is based on the life of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, couldn’t create ripples at the box office due to several reasons. The film released at a time when cinema halls were closed in Maharashtra, a key contributor to theatrical business. Popular multiplex chains had also refused to screen the movie due to the two-week gap between the theatrical release and digital release.

Although ‘Thalaivii’ couldn’t set the cash registers jingling, it has performed quite well in the OTT space. The film has emerged as the most-watch content on Netflix, beating the likes of ‘Kota Factory 2’ and ‘Sex Education’.

Kangana shared a post on social media to express her happiness over the success of ‘Thalaivii’ on the streaming giant. She said that the film had an OTT release and without any promotions before its release on Netflix.

"Thalaivii came in troubled times, many states were shut. We weren't allowed multiplex release and Tamil Nadu hardly had 50 percent occupancy. It was literally a partial OTT release that too without any digital promotions but like they say nothing can stop a good film. With Amma's blessings, Thalaivii smashing records," Kangana wrote on her Instagram story.

‘Thalaivii’, which has been directed by A.L. Vijay, also starred Arvin Swamy, Nassar, Raj Arjun, Bhagyashree and Madhoo in key roles. The film has received critical acclaim from prominent critics including Taran Adarsh.

On the professional front, Kangana will be next seen in ‘Dhaakad’. The ‘Queen’ star is playing the role of a spy in the action thriller, which also features Arjun Rampal and Divya Dutta.

The National Award-winning actress also has ‘Tejas’, ‘Manikarnika Returns’, ‘The Incarnation: Sita’ in her kitty.
