James Cameron Refutes 'Offensive Rumours' Of Directing An OceanGate Film Based On The Titan Tragedy

James Cameron has responded to claims that he is in negotiations to direct a movie about the Titan submersible catastrophe at OceanGate.

New Delhi: James Cameron has responded to claims that he is in negotiations to direct a movie about the Titan submersible catastrophe at OceanGate. Five passengers died in the disaster that occurred last month while they were travelling to the Titanic crash site. On June 18, the submersible exploded close to the ship's ruins, killing everyone within.

James Cameron directed the 1997 iconic drama 'Titanic', featuring Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio, based on the catastropic event of the sinking of the ship after colloiding with an iceberg. Reacting to all the speculations, Cameron took to his social media handle and tweeted, "I don’t respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now. I’m NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be."

Speaking about the Titan tragedy with ABC News in June, the acclaimed filmmaker had said, "Many people in the (deep-submergence engineering) community were very concerned about this sub, and a number of you know of the top players in the community even wrote letters to the company, saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and needed to be certified and so on. I'm struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night. And many people died as a result."

Titan, a vessel owned by OceanGate Expeditions, made yearly journeys to document the Titanic's deterioration and the surrounding undersea habitat since 2021. Debris was discovered while searching for Titan, the US Coast Guard reported last month. Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, Shahzada Dawood and Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet perished in the implosion.
