Know Why Shreya Ghosal Is Embarrassed Of Her ‘Raunchy’ Item Song ‘Chikni Chameli’

Renowned Bollywood singer Shreya Ghoshal talked about the portrayal of women in item songs, particularly the hit song 'Chikni Chameli'.

New Delhi: Fans of Bollywood have had conflicting feelings about item songs for a long time. The lyrics of ‘Chikni Chameli’, which are both daring and sexually suggestive, have sparked a continuous discussion on the objectification of women in Hindi movies. The Katrina Kaif–featured song was sung by famous playback singer Shreya Ghoshal. The singer has a distinct take on these songs, particularly when it comes to her role in popularising the genre.

Shreya Ghoshal recently talked about how humiliated she was with the song ‘Chikni Chameli’ from the film Agneepath (2012). She recently discussed her concerns with performing "raunchy" songs in an interview with Canadian YouTuber Lilly Singh. She brought up her worries about the influence on young girls and the objectification of young women.

She said, "I have a handful of songs which could be borderline raunchy, like Chikni Chameli. There is a fine line between being sensuous, sexy, or being out there, making yourself objectified, or women in general. Why am I a little conscious about it now? It’s because I see young girls sing these songs without understanding the lyrics."

Shreya Ghoshal Shares Concerns About Young Fans

She went on to say, "It's a fun song, they are dancing to it, they come and say, 'Can I sing this in front of you?' Then I feel very embarrassed that a little girl, who is probably 5-6 years old, is singing those lyrics. It doesn't suit, it doesn't sound good, I don't want that."

To conclude, Shreya Ghoshal stressed the value of limits, particularly in a culture like India where films and music have a huge impact on people's lives.

"I have been conscious about that, and even if I am doing it, it is not wrong to be celebrating, happily talking about how sexy I am or how sensuous I am, but don't write it in such a way... Maybe if a woman were writing it, she would have written it in a very gracious manner. She can—it's just a matter of perspective. In our society, especially in India, it is essential to set some benchmark because music and films have a huge impact on our lives," she said.
