Shahid Kapoor Recalls Crying On Movie Set After A Heartbreak: 'I Was Destroying Myself'

Shahid Kapoor opens up about breaking down in tears on set due to heartbreak and discusses the societal pressures faced by men.

New Delhi: Shahid Kapoor, who is famous for his charismatic performances, recently discussed a pivotal period in his career that affected him deeply. In a recent interview with writer Faye D'Souza, the actor shared a personal incident. He recalled a very difficult incident on the set of a film that brought him to tears when asked if he had ever cried while working.

Shahid Kapoor recalled that he was triggered by a devastating heartbreak. He shared, “That only happened to me when I went through heartbreak," he confessed. "And, sometimes it happens when you are making movies. So, I have had that. It was really bad. My makeup guy was like, ‘I just finished your makeup! Can you just not?’”

In his reminiscence, Shahid played out his feelings, laughing and crying as he said, "I can't help it, I think I am destroying myself."

Shahid Kapoor Reflects on Societal Pressures Faced by Men

Shahid not only spoke up about this personal experience, but he also discussed the early cultural expectations placed on boys and men, especially in India.

The actor said, “Indian men especially, have been kind of told from a very young age that you have to be the provider, that you have to protect and be the man of the family… Sometimes, it can put a lot of pressure on you. Sometimes, you just want to relax and be like, ‘I don’t have to keep worrying about everything and everybody… I can just maybe be vulnerable and let somebody else protect me’.”

He further added, “Why can’t we flip roles sometimes? You can feel like that and it’s fair to feel like that because eventually everybody is human. We feel all kinds of emotions. A lot of men find it difficult to express their vulnerable side and I think because I am an actor, maybe I am comfortable because it’s a part of what I do. I have to be able to get to that place which is vulnerable and expressive. When you are an actor, you also understand that vulnerability is extremely attractive. Aggression cannot attract people the way vulnerability does. It’s only human to be vulnerable, so as a man you should be okay with it."

When it comes to his acting career, Shahid Kapoor's next film, 'Deva', will hit cinemas on February 14, 2025.
