Rhea Chakraborty Opens Up On Her Time In Jail: 'People Inside Are Better Than People Outside'
Actor Rhea Chakraborty shared a candid account of the storm she faced after the death of her late boyfriend and actor Sushant Singh Rajput and her life in jail.
New Delhi: In the recent episode of Chetan Bhagat's YouTube talk show ‘Deep Talk With Chetan Bhagat’, actor Rhea Chakraborty shared a candid account of the storm she faced after the death of her late boyfriend and actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
Rhea was arrested in 2020 for allegedly procuring drugs for Sushant. She spent 28 days in jail before being granted bail. She detailed her experience in jail and the ordeal she faced after Sushant’s death.
She told Chetan Bhagat, “It had become a show and my life was on display. I was like, stop it. I thought, ye ho hi jaaye toh better hai (let it happen). Let me go to jail. So many people were after me, that existence was not okay for me. I preferred everything gets clarified, even if that means going to jail.”
“I maintained a diary in jail and the first thing I wrote in it was “People inside are better than the people outside,” she said.
“It’s a different world. I started feeling grateful when I saw that many prisoners don’t have family support. Or they don’t have Rs. 5,000 or Rs. 10,000 for their bail. At least, I have my family and friends. I told myself, ‘You will get justice. You will get bail. You have not done anything wrong. I have so much to learn from these women while I am here. Why am I wasting my time sulking about what is not in my control?’” shared Rhea.
Rhea had to reschedule her sleep cycle to fit the meal timings in jail which would end with dinner at 2 pm. She would sleep for 12 hours straight because of the mental exhaustion of what she had gone through outside jail.
“You get breakfast at 6 a.m., lunch at 11 a.m., and dinner at 2 p.m. because it goes with the British way of things. They open the gates at 6 a.m. and lock you in at 5 p.m. Until then, you can take a shower, go to the library, etc. Most people save their dinner and have it at 7-8 p.m. However, I changed my whole cycle. Yeh khana toh waise bhi khaya nahin jaayega. Garam hoga toh fir bhi khaya jaayega. Thanda toh bilkul nahin khaya jaayega. Hence, I started waking up at 4 a.m. and finishing my dinner at 2 p.m.,” she said in the interview.
Rhea said that she did not get time to mourn or grieve since a lot of people were after her. She figured that she would have to wear her “armour” and face the music since her parents were being attacked too.
In a segment of the video titled “overcoming the darkest phase in jail”, the actress revealed that a part of her brain was telling her that she would never be able to live a normal life again.
Two months after Rhea’s stay, her brother had gone to jail too. She told Chetan that it was an abominable time for the whole family, but her parents were amazing supporters during a long and drawn-out ordeal.
