A fatwa has been issued against Tamil Nadu actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay by a Sunni Muslim body in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, following a controversial iftar party he hosted on March 7 in Chennai. The chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has been accused of disrespecting Islam, with claims that he invited alcoholics to the event.
Fatwa issued against actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay
Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilly, the National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat and Chief Mufti of Chashme Darul Ifta, has issued a fatwa against actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay. The fatwa, issued in response to a query, labels Vijay as anti-Muslim, citing his past actions and background as evidence of behaviour against Islam. The fatwa also declares that inviting “alcoholics and gamblers to Iftar” is both illegal and sinful, urging Muslims in Tamil Nadu to avoid trusting or involving such individuals in religious gatherings.
"Vijay Thalapathy is using Muslim sentiments to make his way into politics from the film world when his history is full of anti-Muslim sentiment," Maulana Razvi said, according to a report in India Today.
He mentioned, "In his film The Beast, he has linked Muslims and the entire Muslim community with terrorism and militancy. In the film, Thalapathy tries to show Muslims as ‘monsters’ and ‘devils’. And now since he is entering politics and he wants votes, he is doing Muslim appeasement."

Thalapathy Vijay's Iftar party
For those who may not know, Vijay is preparing for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections and is expected to contest independently, without any alliance with the AIADMK.
On March 7, Vijay hosted an Iftar gathering in Chennai, where he warmly greeted Muslims, dressed in a skullcap, white shirt, and dhoti. Vijay expressed his gratitude to those who accepted his invitation and participated in the event. During the Iftar, he joined Muslims in prayer and broke his fast alongside them.
Later, the actor-politician appeared from the sunroof of his campaign van, waving to his excited fans who had gathered along the roadsides and on a flyover.
