New Delhi: AR Rahman, an Oscar-winning music director, and Saira Banu, his wife, have released a joint statement confirming their separation and asking for privacy at this difficult time. Nevertheless, Rahman's social media post garnered reactions from followers who were both supportive and critical due to his inclusion of the hashtag "ARR Sairaa Breakup."
Along with the joint statement, AR Rahman also posted an emotional message on social media on the breakup. He wrote, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. AR Rahman Trolled For Using Hashtag
A number of social media users swiftly started to criticise Rahman's hashtag choice. The use of a public hashtag to request privacy was called out by others, sparking a heated debate and even some online harassment.
A user wrote, "Dude wants privacy, yet, he starts a hashtag for the break up," while another one said, “I’m so glad to see everyone responding to this bloody hashtag – who does that for a divorce, after 29 years of marriage?!?!?!”
Some users also criticised the composer's PR team, commenting, "Breakup with a hashtag!! PR at its best." Another user wrote, “Who creates hashtag for this situation? Fire your admin.”
On Tuesday, Rahman and Saira Banu, who were married in 1995 in an arranged marriage, announced their separation. The couple has three children, daughters Khatija and Rahima, and son Ameen Rahman.
