Amaal Mallik On Decision To Sever Ties With Parents: 'I Just Wanted Everyone To Back Off'
Amaal Mallik opened up about his emotional fallout with his parents, the pressure to match brother Armaan’s success, and how a heartfelt post led to tough conversations and eventual reconciliation.

Composer-singer Amaal Mallik made headlines earlier this year after publicly announcing that he was distancing himself from his parents - a move that sparked concern among fans and industry insiders alike. Now, in a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal has opened up about what led to that emotional post and how he eventually reconciled with his family.
Amaal on why he decided to cut ties with his parents
Speaking on the podcast, Amaal revealed that he had reached a breaking point in his personal and professional life. “I think I just hit a ceiling. My family failed to understand the amount of stress I was dealing with because of the industry and my work. In order to make truly original music, you need a stable mind. I have no idea how I managed to do it for so long, but then it got to a point where I was like, ‘Everyone, please get off my back; I am trying to work.’”
Amaal shared that unresolved differences with his parents, especially misunderstandings about his mental health and career pressures, had become overwhelming. His relationship with his father was strained, as they frequently found themselves at odds. “There were a lot of differences that we had to deal with. My father and I were arguing a lot. He told me that I was the ‘trial-ball’ for him, and back when I was born, he was trying to figure out parenthood in the best way he could.”
His bond with his mother was also under stress. Amaal said she found it hard to accept his way of life and often saw him as rebellious. “My mother failed to understand whatever I was going through, and she started comparing my timeline to Armaan’s, which isn’t fair. Everything happens according to its own pace. In their eyes, both brothers should earn the same and live the same kind of life, which is not possible.”
He added that the now-deleted social media post distancing himself from his parents was his way of asking for space. “I sent that post out because I just wanted everyone to back off and let me do my work and make my music.”
Amaal on his relationship with his brother Armaan
Despite the turbulence, Amaal made it clear that his love for his younger brother Armaan Mallik remains unwavering. “My little brother will always be my darling.”
Reflecting on the aftermath of the post, Amaal described how he shut himself off for a while, causing panic among friends and loved ones. “I didn’t pick anyone’s calls for at least days days, and at the end of it, I had, like, 400 missed calls. My friends and other people close to me were worried that I might do something to hurt myself, but I assured them that nothing like that is going to happen.”
Since then, he shared, the family has had heart-to-heart conversations that helped clear the air. “I think even they have realised a lot of things, and we have come much closer now.”
