Background
West Bengal witnessed the most intense political tussle ever between the state's ruling government, Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress and the Bhartiya Janata Party.
The most furious battle began when Mamata Banerjee left her home seat Bhawanipore and contesting from Nandigram against former ally now BJP Leader Suvendu Adhikari. The state has recorded an average of around 80 per cent polling.
While a straight fight is expected between the BJP and the TMC on most of the seats, the CPI (M)-Congress-ISF alliance has made the battle triangular on several seats. Bengal experienced the most critical assembly elections in 2021 with factors like NRC, CAA, and religious polarisation, the most important one which is expected to be the decider of the results will be the handling of Covid 19.
While BJP is experiencing criticism at a national level for Covid mismanagement, Mamata's TMC is facing strong anti-incumbency sentiment after ruling the state for 10 years. The results for the 294 seats will be declared today
