Lok Sabha Polls Phase 2 Voter Turnout: Bengal Records Decent Numbers Amid Violence, Northeast Surges Ahead

Lok Sabha Polls Phase 2 Voter Turnout: The second phase of polling in the Lok Sabha elections ended in 12 states and 1 Union Territory with a relatively poor turnout in UP, Bihar and Maharashtra.

Lok Sabha Polls Phase 2 Voter Turnout: The second phase of polling ended AT 6 PM on Friday with isolated incidents of tension and violence being reported from Bengal, which went to polls in three constituencies. Overall, the northeastern states of Tripura and the ethnic violence-hit Manipur recorded a healthy voter turnout of over 78.63 percent and 77.18 percent, respectively, till the voting was closed at 6 PM. Outside the Northeast, Chhattisgarh was ranked high on the turnout list.

However, the Lok Sabha polls phase 2 voter turnout in Maharashtra, which has the second-largest population in India, was the lowest. West Bengal, which saw scuffles and assaults between groups of BJP and TMC workers, recorded a relatively higher turnout of 71.84 percent in the three constituencies — Raiganj, Balurghat, and Darjeeling.

The northeastern state of Assam, which is going to polls for the first time after the 2023 delimitation, also saw a voter turnout on the higher side at 70.68 percent. A minor disturbance at a polling booth due to an EVM malfunction was reported from the Laharighat in the Nawgong constituency.

Uttar Pradesh, the largest state in India in terms of population, saw a relatively low voter turnout of 53.39 percent. Voting was largely peaceful in all the 8 constituencies that went to polls. The overall voter turnout in the second phase of polling till the close of polling booths on Friday was 60.96 percentage.

Initially, the polls were to be held in 88 constituencies. However, the Betul election had to be postponed after the death of the BSP candidate from that seat. The BSP enjoys a 'National Party' status.
