Elections 2022: FIR Against BJP's Babita Phogat & 63 Others For Flouting Covid Rules During Poll Campaigning

The ECI had extended the ban on physical rallies till January 31 on Saturday in view of the covid-19 situation in the country.

New Delhi: An FIR was registered against wrestler Babita Phogat for organising a rally and flouting covid-19 norms issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Phogat was campaigning for BJP candidate Krishnapal S Malik in the Baraut Assembly in Baghpat on Monday. 63 others were also mentioned in the FIR.

The ECI had extended the ban on physical rallies till January 31 on Saturday in view of the covid-19 situation in the country.

In a press note released on Saturday, January 22, the ECI had stated “No road show, Pad-yatra, cycle/bike/vehicle rally and procession shall be allowed till January 31, 2022.”

However, the public meetings of political parties to decide upon candidates for phases 1 and 2 are allowed after January 28 with certain restrictions.

Along with that limit of persons for door-to-door campaigns was also increased from five to ten persons.

Besides, the video vans for publicity are also allowed with certain restrictions, keeping in mind the covid-19 appropriate behaviour.

Uttar Pradesh will go to the polls in seven phases starting from February 10. The second phase will take place on February 14, the third on February 20, the fourth on February 23, fifth on February 27. The sixth phase will take place on March 3.

The seventh and final phase polling will take place on March 7, and the assembly election result will be declared on March 10.

All the major parties have already released their candidate list and the star campaigner lists for the first two phases of the assembly elections.
