Day After Being Picked By BJP, Bhojpuri Singer Pawan Singh Says He Can't Contest From Asansol

Pawan Singh, a well-known Bhojpuri actor and singer, has acted in several films, including "Pratigya," "Dacait," "Ziddi Aashiq," and "Pratigya 2."

A day after BJP nominated Pawan Singh to contest upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Asansol constituency, the Bhojpuri Singer stated that he will not be able to fight from the seat. Asansol constituency lies in the coal mine belt of West Burdwan district in West Bengal. Singh's candidacy drew criticism from TMC leaders, who claimed several of his songs included obscene and insulting references to Bengali women.

Taking to X, Pawan Singh stated: "I express my heartfelt gratitude to the top leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party. The party trusted me and declared me as the candidate from West Bengal's Asansol but due to some reason, I will not be able to contest the elections from Asansol."

In response to Singh's decision, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee stated: “The indomitable spirit and power of the people of West Bengal.”

Mocking BJP, Rajya Sabha MP and TMC leader Saket Gokhale stated: "Of the 42 seats in West Bengal, BJP has already surrendered 1 seat even before elections are declared."

'Modi's Misogyny And Hypocrisy': TMC Backlash On Singh's Candidacy

In recent weeks, the BJP seemed to have pushed the ruling TMC on the defensive regarding accusations of sexual misconduct involving its local leaders in Sandeshkhali. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the Sandeshkhali controversy during his speech in Arambagh on Friday.

Soon after Singh's name for the Lok Sabha elections was announced, TMC leaders took to social media to attack the BJP.

Sharing posters of songs featuring the Bhojpuri artiste, TMC leader and Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale posted on X: "I’m really sorry to bring this on your newsfeeds on a Sunday morning but this is crucial to show Modi’s misogyny & hypocrisy. BJP yesterday announced Bhojpuri singer Pawan Singh as their Lok Sabha candidate from Asansol, West Bengal. Pawan Singh makes videos that are extremely VULGAR & misogynist & targets the women of Bengal. He refers to women as “maal” & his “mistress” as can be seen in the two images from his videos below. Amazingly, BJP @amitmalviya praises these vulgar videos & even calls for “RESPECTING them”. What else can be expected from a man who hired the men that raped women in BHU in his BJP IT Cell. But what about Modi? He has been paying lip service to “Nari Shakti” as part of his 2024 election campaign to hoodwink women around the country."

Babul Supriyo, the former Member of Parliament from Asansol and current State Tourism Minister, stated that Singh's films and songs portrayed women in a derogatory manner. “Asansol ko Pawan Singh ji Mubarak ho @BJP4Bengal… I have not verified it personally nor will verify them but I am flooded with posters of these films… Nothing against Pawanji the artist, but if these posters are true, then it clearly shows what kind of respect @BJP4India has for Bengal & specially for women from Bengal. Sure Honble PM sir will come to Polo Ground to campaign for him,” he posted on X.
