West Bengal Assembly Passes Resolution Against NEET, Plans To Introduce New Medical Entrance Examination

According to the resolution, the state government will introduce a new entrance examination for students seeking to pursue medical studies.

The West Bengal Assembly passed a resolution on Wednesday to scrap the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in the state and replace it with a new medical entrance examination. This move comes after Karnataka's similar decision to opt out of the NEET examination. According to the resolution, the state government will introduce a new entrance examination for students seeking to pursue medical studies. The decision aims to provide more opportunities for state students and address concerns over NEET's format.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court dismissed requests to cancel and re-conduct the NEET UG 2024 examination. This decision came out after the court found no evidence of widespread cheating or question paper leaks.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the government has always claimed there’s no big issue and that students are the main priority. According to the recent announcements, NTA will release the revised final NEET UG result 2024 in two days.

"The truth has prevailed. We welcome the decision of the Supreme Court. We have been saying this from the beginning that our priority is students of this country. Government's priority has always been to see that there should be no tampering with students' future... From the last 2-2.5 months, the government's stand has been that there has not been any large-scale breach," Dharmendra Pradhan said.

On the issue of the controversial physics question in the NEET UG examination, the bench accepted the report of the experts of IIT Delhi that there was only one right answer and not two. Previously, there were 61 toppers in the NEET UG 2024 examination. However, after the court’s decision, 44 students who got full marks for one of two Physics questions will no longer receive those marks. So, the revised total number of toppers will be 17.
