UP: Students Walk On Ramp Wearing Burqa, Muslim Body Seeks Apology

Jamiat Ulama has accused the college administration of targetting a specific religion, and threatened of legal action, if the college authorities do not apologize.

A bid by some college students in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh to portrait their fashion quotient has outraged a muslim body, and caught itself in a controversy. The row erupted after some students walked down the ramp wearing Burqas, as part of their creative project ‘"unity in diversity," as per an NDTV report. The move by the students has outraged Jamiat Ulama, a muslim body, which has demanded an apology from the institution. A representative from the Jamiat Ulama has been reported as saying that the burqah, is a clothing meant to be used as a ‘purdah,’ and not something that can be used on occasions like fashion shows.

The controversy erupted after a video showcasing a fashion show at the Shri Ram College, Muzaffarnagar went viral. The fashion show was a part of a three-day event named ‘Fashion Splash,’ that witnessed students of college display western as well as traditional clothing on stage, where some students also walked down the ramp wearing burqas.

At the event organised by students studying fashion design at the college was reportedly attended by a former Bollywood actor and a television actor. Reacting to the incident Jamiat Ulama's district convener Maulana Mukarram Qasmi reportedly accused the college authorities of targeting a specific religion, and warned of legal action against the institution, if they don’t apologize.

Students of the college though, have said that clothing of all kinds were displayed at the fashion event, and burqas were used in the event just as a means to showcase creativity, and display the designs. In the meanwhile, the college has stood firm with the students who have also garnered support from a representative of the Darul Uloom, another muslim body, citing that the burqah in the fashion show was used as a means of representation.
