On Track To Process Highest Applications For Students: US Ambassador To India Eric Garcetti

The seventh annual Student Visa Day event aimed to facilitate the visa process for Indian students who plan to study in the United States.

New Delhi: The US Mission in India successfully organized its seventh annual Student Visa Day across the country. Consular Officers from New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai conducted interviews with around 3,500 Indian student visa applicants. The event aimed to facilitate the visa process for Indian students who plan to study in the United States. Ambassador Eric Garcetti, along with Consuls General from various cities in India, extended their congratulations to the visa recipients. They acknowledged the students' decision to pursue their education in the United States, recognizing it as the world's top destination for international students.

“I first came to India as a young student, and I’ve seen in my own life how transformative these experiences can be,” said Ambassador Eric Garcetti.

“Student exchange is at the heart of US-India relations, and with good reason. A US education provides students a world-class education and access to a global network of knowledge, laying the foundation for a lifetime of understanding.  That’s why we are here today, to encourage these opportunities for as many Indian students as possible,” Ambassador said.

Ambassador Garcetti also reiterated the statistic that one out of every five US student visas issued in 2022 was granted to Indian applicants, surpassing the proportion of the Indian population in the world.

Eric Garcetti said, "One out of every 5 US student visas was issued in India in 2022. One out of five in the world, which is more than the proportion of the Indian population in the world. So, Indians have not only pursued an education in the United States but for decades have shown their excellence in the US and we are on track to process the highest number of visa applications for students in our history"

Student Visa Day serves as a celebration of the enduring higher education connections between the United States and India. It highlights the significant number of Indian students who choose to pursue their studies at US academic institutions. In the present year, the count of Indian students studying in the United States has exceeded 200,000, constituting over 20 percent of the total international student population in the country.

Brendan Mullarkey, the acting Minister Counselor for Consular Affairs in India said, “Last year, a record-breaking 125,000 Indians were issued student visas, which is more than were issued to any other nationality.  In fact, one out of every five student visas were issued in India last year. This year, we will interview more students than ever before.”

The US Mission encourages all students interested in studying in the United States to contact EducationUSA, the free US government-sponsored advising service that offers credible and comprehensive information to help navigate the admission and visa processes.
