Thiruvananthapuram: Schools, Colleges To Remain Closed Tomorrow Amid Heavy Rainfall

Kerala Revenue Minister K Rajan has said that Thiruvananthapuram has received over 100 mm of rainfall since Saturday.

The Thiruvananthapuram district administration has asked all schools under its jurisdiction to remain closed tomorrow. The move from the district administration comes in the wake of the incessant rainfall in Thiruvananthapuram, in the past couple of days. As per media reports, Thiruvananthapuram District collector Geromic George has directed all schools and colleges in the district to remain closed tomorrow, in the wake of heavy rainfalls. 

Notably, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also ‘Orange alert’ for four districts in Kerala and various parts of Thiruvananthapuram. In the past few days, heavy rains have lashed several parts of the state leading to water-logging in various districts. Following the heavy rainfall, landslides and flooding have also been reported from some parts of the state, especially Thiruvananthapuram. 

Visuals from various regions of Kerala have also showcased cars almost submerged in water with rescuers helping people evacuate from homes in inflatable boats to camps in some parts of Thiruvananthapuram. 

Following the state-wide rain chaos, Kerala State General Education Minister V Sivankutty visited the flooded areas. Through a Facebook post, the Kerala minister stated that the severe rainfall has created an ‘unusual’ situation in Thiruvananthapuram, and the situation is further worsened by waterlogging in many places, and the non-receding sea water. 

The minister further stated that the district administration has been conducting relief operations on a wartime basis and has been providing all possible assistance to those affected. In a press brief after a ministerial level meeting, Sivankutty further said that many parts of Thiruvananthapuram, especially the capital city, have been seriously affected by floods and waterlogging.

State Revenue Minister K Rajan, who also visited the flood-affected areas, said that the capital city has received over 100 mm of rainfall, and almost double in areas around the international airport since Saturday. "It is one of the major reasons for the waterlogging and flooding," he was reported as saying by news agency PTI.
