Revanth Reddy Govt Issues Order To Make Telugu Compulsory In All Telangana Schools

Telugu Compulsory In Schools: Telangana has mandated Telugu as a compulsory subject in CBSE, ICSE, IB, and state board-affiliated schools.

The Telangana Government has issued an order implementing Telugu as a compulsory subject in CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other Board-affiliated schools in Telangana. The directive was issued by the state’s school education department on Tuesday.

The regulation applies to institutions affiliated with various educational boards, including CBSE, ICSE, and the International Baccalaureate (IB).

Starting from the 2025-26 academic year, the requirement will be enforced for students in Class 9, while Class 10 students will follow the rule from the 2026-27 academic session. The Indian Express quoted an education department official as saying that the move had been in the works since 2018, and the government has now decided to proceed with its implementation.

As per the directive, CBSE students in Classes 9 and 10 will have the option to study "simple Telugu", known as Vennela, instead of the standard version, Singidi, the Indian Express Report said.

While government schools in Telangana predominantly teach Telugu, institutions affiliated with non-state boards have largely omitted the language from their curriculum. “There is a conscious effort to sustain Telugu learning among the younger generation. The recommendation to reinforce Telugu education was made long ago by the Telugu Classical Language Committee,” the official added.

Telangana’s decision to introduce mandatory Telugu instruction coincides with Tamil Nadu’s opposition to the National Education Policy, which critics argue imposes Hindi on students.

More than a third of Telangana’s schools follow an English-medium curriculum.

Back in 2008, before the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the state had introduced English-medium instruction in government schools, a policy that continued after the formation of Telangana.
