Summer Holidays In Odisha Schools Extended By 2 Days Due To Heatwave

The Odisha government has decided to extend the summer vacation for schools in the state.

In response to the prevailing hot and humid weather conditions, the Odisha government has decided to extend the summer vacation for schools in the state. An official statement confirmed that both government and private schools will now reopen on June 21 instead of the previously scheduled date of June 19, as reported by PTI. This two-day extension aims to provide relief to students and staff from the discomfort caused by the weather.

"The government after careful consideration has been pleased to reopen the schools under the School and Mass Education department on 21.06.2023," the letter issued by the department said.

The entire state of Odisha is currently experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius or higher in 31 locations on Friday. Sonepur recorded the highest temperature at 45.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Jharsuguda at 45.4 degrees Celsius, Balangir at 45.3 degrees Celsius, and Sambalpur at 44.8 degrees Celsius, among others. Bhubaneswar, the capital city, reached 44.6 degrees Celsius.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), there will be no significant change in the maximum temperature (day temperature) over the next four days, with a slight decrease expected thereafter in many areas of the state. During this period, temperatures are anticipated to be 4-7 degrees Celsius above normal at a few locations.

Sources at the local weather office have indicated that the state may witness the onset of the southwest monsoon between June 18 and June 21. This could bring relief from the scorching heat and potentially lower temperatures in the coming days.
