Schools In Pune And Pimpri Chinchwad Closed Today Due To Heavy Rains

Pune Schools Closed: The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to intense rain in the next few hours.

Pune Schools Closed: Due to heavy rains and more rain predicted by the Weather Department, the administration has declared a holiday today, July 25, 2024, for schools in Pune city, Pimpri Chinchwad, and the western parts of the district. The announcement follows heavy rain in the ghat areas since last night. This has made authorities increase the water release from Kharadwasla dam to 35,574 cusecs around 6 am. According to data shared by district administration, in the past 24 hours ending at 7:30 am, Lonavla and Lavasa have received 300mm and 417mm rainfall.

"About 40,000 cusecs of water is being discharged from Khadakwasla dam from 6 am onwards. Also, there is a possibility of waterlogging in the low-lying areas of Pune city. Therefore, District Collector Diwase has appealed to the citizens to be alert and to go out of the house only if necessary," reads the official release.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to intense rain in the next few hours. Collector Diwase has advised people in low-lying areas to be careful and stay indoors.

Pune and nearby areas have been experiencing heavy rains overnight. The heavy rain in the catchment areas has also increased the water release from Khadakwasla dam. At 2 am, the water discharge was 40,000 cusecs and is expected to increase further, which might cause waterlogging in low lying areas of the city. Furthermore, the RMC has stated that North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada districts are likely to receive heavy rain in some places. The Vidarbha districts might have thundershowers, strong winds, and heavy rain in some areas.

In a recent update shared by BMC, the Tansa Lake, which supplies water to Mumbai, started overflowing at around 4:16 pm yesterday. Three gates of the Tansa Dam have been opened, releasing water at a rate of 3,315 cusecs. Notably, the full storage capacity of Tansa Lake is 14,508 crore liters.
