Over 1900 Posts In Gujarat Medical Colleges, Hospitals Lying Vacant: State Govt Tells Assembly

Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said in the state assembly that over 1,900 posts in state-run medical colleges and hospitals are lying vacant.

The Gujarat government informed the state legislative assembly on Tuesday, March 28, that over 1900 vacant posts are lying vacant at state-run medical colleges. 

Among the total of 14, 403 sanctioned posts, 1974 were lying vacant at five state-run medical colleges, four major civil hospitals, five physiotherapy colleges and two dental colleges in the state, as of December 2022,  Gujarat Health Minister Hrushikesh Patel was reported as saying by news agency PTI. 

In his response to questions from MLAs, the Gujarat Health Minister said that among the overall 3,925 posts sanctioned at five state-run medical colleges in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar, a total of 973 posts were lying vacant. 

Out of the total 9,732 posts sanctioned at four government-run hospitals in Ahmedabad, Surat, Jamnagar and Vadodara, 834 posts were still lying vacant, he further added.

Talking about five state-run physiotherapy hospitals, he said that a total of 318 posts were sanctioned to these colleges, out of which, 85 posts were still found vacant. He further informed the assembly that out of 438 total sanctioned posts at two dental colleges in Ahmedabad and Jamnagar, 82 posts were found to be vacant in these colleges as well. 

In the discussion in the assembly that followed after Rushikesh Patel’s shared the information, a number of BJP MLAs including Vadodara MLA Yogesh Patel, raised concerns over the shortage of manpower in state-run hospitals in Gujarat, and also sought the timeline for the supposed completion of recruitment of appropriate staff for the vacant posts. 

During the discussion, the Gujarat Health Minister highlighted the state government's commitment to provide optimal healthcare to the people of the state. The minister also added that the recruitment of suitable candidates for the vacant posts were being done at regular intervals.
