NEET Re-Exam Or Not? SC Faces Dilemma As 5 Students File Plea Against Retest

Students propose re-evaluation of all OMR sheets to address complaints of rank inflation and tampering rather than a re-test.

NEET-UG 2024 controversy: In another turn to the ongoing controversy around NEET-UG results, now a petition has been filed by five candidates against cancellation of this examination. The top court has listed for July 8, several petitions allegeing paper leak and malpractices in the conduct of NEET-UG exam and seeking re-test on the same gounds. Now a petition has been filed in the top court stating that cancellation of results and re-examination will be an arbitrary decision and will violate their fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19 and 21 of Constituion.

Petitioners oppose cancellation of NEET-UG 2024 test and propose re-evaluation of all OMR sheets to address complaints of rank inflation and tampering. They also sought re-evaluation of 24,000 candidates for whom the NTA opened a window for registeration after the initial deadline had passed.

Thes petitioners have also appeared in the NEET-UG examination this year, and submitted in the court that cancellation of the exam will amount to “severe injustice.” They contend that such cancellation will severely cause prejudice to deserving candidates and will benefit only few.

“The alleged cancellation of examination, at this stage will have serious repercussions on the candidates who have thoroughly worked hard for the examination. The Petitioners propose to suggest that in view of the rank inflation this year, which is clear from the chart below, it is advisable to have revaluation of the scores rather than having a re-neet for all the candidates,” the petition read.

The NTA conducted the NEET examination on May 5 across 4,750 centers and was taken by around 24 lakh candidates. Although the results were expected to be declared on June 14, they were announced earlier on June 4, as the evaluation of the answer sheets was completed ahead of schedule. Allegations of a question paper leak and the granting of grace marks to over 1,500 medical aspirants have sparked protests and led to the filing of cases in high courts as well as the Supreme Court.

So far, the NTA has allready conducted re-test for 1563 students to whome it had granted grace marks on pretext of loss of time at examination centre.
