Lok Sabha Passes Bill To Establish Central Tribal University In Telangana

The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was presented in the Lok Sabha earlier this week by Union Edu Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, to establish a new Central Tribal University In Telangana.

The Lok Sabha has passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, today. The passage of the key bill paves the way for the establishment of the new 'Proposed 'Central Tribal University in Telangana.' The bill was passed after a reply to the debate by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today, news agency ANI reported. Union Minister of State (MoS) for Education, Subhas Sarkar moved the bill for further consideration and passage, as per a LiveLaw report. 

Notably, the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, paves way for the establishment of the newly proposed ‘Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University’ in Telangana, with territorial jurisdiction extending to the state. The upcoming tribal university in Telangana is aimed at serving as a hub for quality higher education and research in the region, especially for the tribal population. 

Under its quality higher education and research ambit, the new Central Tribal University shall promote and cater advanced knowledge systems to the tribal population of the country by providing instructional and research facilities in tribal art, culture and customs and advancement in technology. 

Notably, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation act, 2014, which chalked out a separate Telangana state from the earlier Andhra Pradesh, mandates the setting up of a Central Tribal University in Telangana.

Earlier this year in October, Prime Minister Modi addressing a public rally in Telangana’s Mahbubnagar, announced the establishment of a new ‘Central Tribal University’ in the ‘Mulug’ district of Telangana, named after tribal goddesses ‘Sammakka and Sarakka,’ worshipped in Telangana. PM Modi further announced that the new varsity in Telangana will be set up with an expenditure of Rs 900 crore. 

Following the PM's announcement of the new tribal varsity in Telangana, the Union cabinet approved an amendment to the Central Universities Act, 2009 for the setting up of the recently announced Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University in Telangana.
