Jawaharlal Nehru University Notifies Election Committee For Students' Union Polls

JNU has announced the formation of the election committee for the upcoming students' union polls.

New Delhi: After a four-year hiatus, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced the formation of the election committee for the upcoming students' union polls. Since the last JNUSU elections in 2019, the process had been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shailendra Kumar has been elected by the Executive Committee as the chairperson of the election committee to oversee the JNUSU elections for the term 2023-24, according to the notification. Dean of Students, Manuradha Chaudhary, has released a list comprising 42 students, including the chairperson, who will constitute the election committee. Their responsibilities include overseeing the vote counting process and announcing the poll results.

"In reference to the circular dated 16.02.2024 wherein Ms Aishe Ghosh and Mr Md Danish were authorised to conduct GBM of the students for formation of the election committee to initiate the JNUSU elections 2023-24 process. In this regard, the following list of EC members along with chairperson election committee has been submitted. The dean of students hereby notifies the same," the notification dated March 6 read.

Preparations for the polls will commence, with momentum increasing once the dean's office announces the dates for the JNUSU elections.

During the 2019 polls, the united front of Left student organizations comprising SFI, AISA, AISF, and DSF secured victory in the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) elections. Aishe Ghosh emerged as the president, triumphing over the arch-rival RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

The university expressed strong condemnation, releasing a statement saying, "It has come to the notice of JNU security branch that an unidentified individual was found to be indulged in a public nudity act.
