Goa Schools Closed Today For Classes Upto 12 Due To Heavy Rains

Schools Closed: All schools from class 1 to 12 across Goa will remain closed on Monday.

Panaji: The Goa Education Department on Sunday declared a holiday for schools up to Class 12 on Monday (July 15) citing heavy rains in the coastal state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Goa on Monday due to heavy downpours lashing the state over the past three days. As a result of the continuous heavy showers and the red alert issued by the IMD, all schools from Standard I to Standard XII across Goa will remain closed on Monday, State Education Director Shailesh Zingde told reporters.

He stated that the holiday has been declared for the safety of students.

Earlier, speaking to ANI, Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant said, "The Director of Education has been asked to issue a circular that there will be a holiday on Monday as a red alert has been declared and due to this, all the schools of Goa from pre-primary to the 12th standard will remain closed tomorrow."

He further informed, "All the roads are overflowed, and water has been filled everywhere. Due to this, we have declared a holiday for one day. But, it is not a government holiday, government offices and everything else will remain open as usual. My request to all the people is that there is heavy rainfall in all the places of Goa and hence one should not go out of the house without any need but only if there is an emergency work... Eighty people who were stranded at the waterfall have been rescued..."

According to the IMD, Pernem in North Goa received 210 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday. The red alert suggests the chances of extremely heavy rainfall, and authorities are actively monitoring the situation, promising to provide further updates as needed
