Fourth-Year IIT Kharagpur Student Found Dead Inside Hostel, Police Suspect Suicide

The deceased student hailed from Telangana and was a fourth-year dual-degree student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the institute.

In yet another suicide case in IITs, a studnet from Telangana has allegedly killed self by suicide. As per the institute, the body of the deceased student who stayed at the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hall of Residence was found hanging inside the hostel room. An Indian Express report citing sources from the institute states that the body of the deceased student was found by his hostel mates, who rushed him to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. 

While the institute indicates towards the incident as suicide, the police have started investigating the matter. However, the initial assumptions point towards suicide, police sources were reported as saying. The student, K Kiran Chandra hailed from Telangana, and was a fourth-year dual-degree student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the institute.

“With a sense of utter shock, the students, staff and faculty members of IIT Kharagpur deeply mourn the sudden demise of K Kiran Chandra, a 4th year dual degree student in the Department of Electrical Engineering," IIT kharagpur said in an official statement. The police have registered a case of unnatural death into the incident, and the body has been sent for post-mortem at the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital. 

"Till about 7:30 pm, Chandra was with two of his roommates in their hostel room. Later, the other two students left for academic activities. Subsequently, around 8.30 pm, fellow boarders of the LBS Hall found his room locked from inside. The door was forced open... Despite all efforts by doctors, Chandra was declared dead around 11:30 pm,"  the statement added. 

Earlier last year, the death of a third-year student, Faizan Ahmad, at IIT Kharagpur gained severe attention while also raising serious concerns. The partially decomposed body of a third-year IIT Kharagpur student was recovered from his hostel room, after the authorities broke open the door of the hostel room, as per a premier official of the institute.
