28 Indian Students Deported From US To India This Year: Centre

The government requested US authorities to ensure fairness in the entry of Indian students with valid student visas.

New Delhi: The Indian government confirmed the deportation of twenty-eight students from the US to India this year, as reported by PTI. V Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs, reiterated the government's ongoing communication with US authorities concerning these occurrences.

"According to the information available, a total of 28 Indian students were repatriated from the US to India in the year 2023," Minister of State for External Affairs said replying to a question.

"The government has regularly expressed our concerns to the US authorities regarding such instances and requested them to ensure fairness with regard to entry of Indian students who hold valid student visas," Muraleedharan said.

In response to another inquiry, he acknowledged that New Delhi is cognizant of Indian nationals, including students, encountering deportation from Canada due to allegations of submitting counterfeit letters of admission to Canadian educational institutions.

"It was found that many of these students were sent by unscrupulous agents in India. The ministry has taken up the matter, including with the government of Punjab, to identify and bring to justice the unscrupulous agents/entities concerned involved in these cases," the minister said in his written response.

He said that the government has been actively addressing this issue by engaging with the relevant Canadian authorities. Their aim is to support these individuals in adhering to local laws and regulations, facilitating their stay in Canada.

"Canadian authorities were urged to be fair and take a humanitarian approach since the students were not at fault," Muraleedharan said.

"As a result of these efforts, some affected Indian nationals received stay orders on their deportation notices or temporary resident visas," he said.

Muraleedharan said the government is engaged with Canada through diplomatic channels on the issue.
