20-Year-Old NEET Aspirant From Bengal Dies By Suicide In Kota

The student’s landlord informed the police when the 20-year-old did not respond to several knocks.

A 20-year-old student from West Bengal, undergoing preparation for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission into UD medical courses, was found dead in Rajasthan’s coaching hub of Kota late on Monday, police said.  According to the media reports, NEET aspirant Hussain was discovered hanging in his rented room in Kota's Wakf Nagar area. Upon being taken to the hospital, doctors pronounced him dead. Hussain resided in a rented accommodation shared with other students. His friends last saw him around 4 pm, after which his room remained locked until nearly 7 pm. When Hussain didn't respond to calls, his friends sought the landlord's help.

The police found Hussain's body upon arrival at the scene.

"An ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident and notified his family members. Postmortem procedures will precede the handover of the student's body to his family,'' the police said.

The rise in student suicides in Kota over recent months has prompted concerns among local authorities about the situation.

Notably, Kota stands as the nucleus of India's test-preparation industry, estimated at a staggering Rs 10,000 crores annually. Upon completing class X, students come to prepare for competitive exams from various corners of the country. However, the intense grind takes a toll on some, especially considering they are far from their families.

Tragically, recent incidents highlight the stress faced by these students. On September 19, a 16-year-old from Uttar Pradesh consumed poison, while another from Jharkhand met a similar fate on September 13. Additionally, within six hours after a weekly test, two NEET students from Bihar and Maharashtra also succumbed to suicide on August 27. These events cast a stark light on the challenges these students endure.
