Delhi Mayoral Election: Notification Expected On April 12, Polls Slated For April 26, Says Report

The notification for the upcoming Delhi mayoral election is expected on April 12. After notification, the nomination process is likely to conclude on April 18, with the election slated for April 26.

The notification for the upcoming Delhi mayoral election is expected on April 12, news agency PTI reported citing official sources on Monday. Following the notification, the nomination process is expected to conclude on April 18, with the mayoral election scheduled for April 26. Shelly Oberoi, the current mayor, will remain in office until a new mayor is elected, official sources had earlier said on April 3.

The new mayoral election in Delhi is expected to take place in late April.

On February 22, Oberoi, an AAP councillor, was elected mayor of Delhi. She defeated BJP candidate Rekha Gupta by 34 votes. Oberoi received 150 votes, while Gupta received 116 votes, out of a total of 266 votes cast.

The voting took place at the Civic Centre, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) headquarters.

The mayor of Delhi was elected in the fourth attempt after previous elections were halted due to a squabble over voting rights for nominated members. After the fiscal year ends, the city elects a new mayor.

In the national capital, the mayor is elected for five single-year terms on a rotating basis, with the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category, and the remaining two for the open category. Mayors' terms have also been extended in the past, the report said.

Last year's civic elections were the first since the three corporations were merged into the MCD and a new delimitation exercise was conducted, reducing the total number of wards from 272 in 2012 to 250.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the high-stakes elections.

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards), and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (64 wards) merged last year, with a notification issued in May.
