Woman Forbidden To Perform Navratri Puja Due To Periods Ends Life With Poison

A woman died by suicide after being unable to perform Navratri puja due to menstruation. She was distressed and decided to consume poison in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.

A woman allegedly died by suicide because she could not perform Navratri puja as she got her period on the first day of the prayers in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi on March 30. Women are usually advised not to participate in prayer rituals if they are menstruating as it is considered impure.

Priyansha Soni was rushed to the hospital after consuming poison and died during treatment.

The 36-year-old was preparing for Chaitra Navratri and the worship of Goddess Durga. A day before the nine-day festivities were about to begin, she asked her husband, Mukesh Soni, to bring the pooja items, such as flowers, fruits, sweets, lamps, and grains — everything was carefully arranged to welcome the goddess.

According to NDTV, Mukesh Soni said that Priyansha could neither fast nor worship the goddess because of her periods. He said that she was stressed about “how everything would happen and who would pray”. While he tried to comfort her and reason with her about periods being natural. She wasn’t able to accept it.

"I offered to perform all the rituals on her behalf, but she was sad," he told NDTV.

As Mukesh left for work, Priyansha became emotional, forcing him to return home to console her. However, after he left for the second time, she allegedly consumed poison and was immediately rushed to the hospital.

She was later discharged and taken to her parents' home, as her husband hoped a change of environment might help improve her condition. However, her health deteriorated shortly after, and she was admitted to a hospital again, where she died during treatment.

According to an India Today report, upon receiving information about the incident, the Kotwali police sent her body for post-mortem and further investigation is underway.

Priyansha Soni lived with her husband, Mukesh Soni, and their two daughters, three-and-a-half-year-old Janvi and two-and-a-half-year-old Manvi.
