Manipur Schools, Colleges To Remain Closed Till November 23 Amid Fresh Tensions In Jiribam

The closure applied on November 16 to both state-run and private institutions in the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching after fresh tensions arose in the Jiribam.

Schools and colleges in the Imphal Valley of Manipur will remain shut until November 23 for the safety of the students, as per official notifications issued on Wednesday.

The closure applied on November 16 to both state-run and private institutions in the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching after fresh tensions arose in the state following the violence in the Jiribam district. And, it is likely to remain closed during this period.

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders were also issued in the five Imphal Valley districts to relax people busying essential items on Thursday. This relaxation will be from 5 am to 12 pm in Imphal East and Kakching districts, and from 5 am to 10 am in Imphal West, Thoubal, and Bishnupur districts, PTI cited official notifications.

Citing improved law and order in the district, authorities from the five districts announced the need to ease movement restrictions to allow the public to procure essential items such as medicines and food, according to similar notifications issued on Wednesday.

"The relaxation however shall not apply to any gathering/ large scale movement of persons/ sit in protests which is unlawful in nature," they added.

Initially, the administrations of Imphal East and Kakching districts had announced a relaxation of restrictions from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., which was later extended to 12 p.m. 

Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS were enforced in these districts to restrict gatherings of five or more individuals amid renewed tensions in the state following the violence in the Jiribam district.

Manipur Govt Extends Mobile Internet Suspension In Seven Districts

Following the violence in the Jiribam district, the Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet services for three more days in seven districts, citing concerns over law and order. The measure, initially imposed on 16 November, aimed to curb the spread of inflammatory content amid escalating violence.  

In an order issued on Wednesday, the state government stated that mobile internet services would remain suspended in Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi, news agency PTI reported.

However, broadband internet services, also suspended on 16 November, were conditionally restored on Tuesday to alleviate the difficulties faced by residents, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and other essential offices.
