RG Kar Rape-Murder Case: Sandip Ghosh, former principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a corruption case on Monday.
The former principal of the medical college, where the trainee doctor died on on August 9, was interrogated for the 15th day on Monday at the agency’s Salt Lake office. The agency's Anti Corruption Branch department later picked up Ghosh from the special crime branch office in the evening and took him to the Nizam Palace, after which he was arrested.
According to a report in ABP Ananda, there were several complaints of financial fraud against the former principal apart from the rape and death of the trainee doctor after which the CBI's anti-corruption wing started probing the allegations.
The hospital's former deputy superintendent Dr Akhtar Ali had lodged complaints of financial irregularities on multiple counts at the establishment during Ghosh's tenure as principal.
The CBI had subjected former RG Kar Medical College to 15 days of intensive questioning in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the prestigious Kolkata-based institution.
This is the second arrest in the RG Kar rape and muder case after the Kolkata Police civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, was arrested by the Kolkata Police and handed over to the CBI.
The probe agency also conducted polygraph tests and voice analysis after the brutal rape and murder of the trainee doctor in the RG Kar Medical College. The CBI on August 25 conducted a day-long search operation at Ghosh’s Beliaghata residence in north-east Kolkata in connection with the corruption cases.
This agency also named Ghosh in the FIR filed in connection with the investigation into the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during his tenure.
Ghosh was slapped under Section 120B of IPC (criminal conspiracy) read with Section 420 IPC (cheating and dishonesty) and Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (amended in 2018) which pertains to unlawful acceptance of gratification by a public servant.
Sandip Ghosh served as principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 to September 2023. He was transferred from RG Kar in October that year but inexplicably returned to that position within a month. He held his position at the hospital till the day the hospital doctor was found murdered.
