Tensions flared near Belda village in Roorkee late Thursday night when a group of Kanwariyas allegedly vandalised an SUV and attacked its driver, triggering widespread concern over escalating road rage incidents during the annual Kanwar Yatra.
According to police, the violent altercation occurred after a minor collision between a vehicle and a group of Kanwariyas en route to Meerut. The SUV, reportedly heading towards Roorkee, came into contact with the pilgrims near Belda village. What began as a seemingly insignificant road mishap soon spiralled out of control.

In a now-viral video, furious Kanwariyas — most of them appearing to be in their early twenties — can be seen surrounding the SUV, smashing its windows and doors with sticks. The driver, Ashu Giri, who was also inside the car at the time.

The group vented their anger, leaving the vehicle severely damaged. Police acted swiftly, detaining five individuals involved in the attack. All arrested men are residents of Ghaziabad, officials confirmed.
The SUV is said to belong to the local administration.
The incident has raised questions about such confrontations during the Kanwar Yatra season. This incident ignited debates over balancing religious fervour with law and order.
