'Never Heard Of Sanjay...': Sonam Raghuvanshi's Brother On New Accused In Raja's Killing

Sonam Raghuvanshi’s brother says he doesn’t know co-accused Sanjay Verma in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case as police widen probe into the shocking honeymoon killing.

In a chilling turn of events in the murder case of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, the Meghalaya Police on Tuesday reconstructed the entire crime scene in Sohra (Cherrapunji), where Raja was allegedly hacked to death during what was supposed to be his honeymoon. The prime accused — Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi — was brought to the spot along with her alleged accomplices, including her partner Raj and three others.

Raja was murdered on May 23, just days after his wedding. His decomposed body was recovered on June 2 from a gorge near the scenic Weisawdong Falls, a location that has now become central to the investigation.

As part of the probe, police teams re-enacted the crime with all accused present. Investigators say the reconstruction helped uncover critical evidence — including a second murder weapon, which had been tossed into a ditch. It was recovered with the help of a metal detector by a joint team of Meghalaya Police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). The first weapon had been found earlier on June 2.

Meanwhile, in Indore, a parallel investigation is underway, with police questioning members of Sonam’s family. Among those being interrogated is her brother, Govind Raghuvanshi, who claimed ignorance about the alleged co-conspirator Sanjay Verma. “I don’t know anything about Sanjay Verma,” Govind said. “I just came to show the police places where Raj used to work. Nothing has been seized from there. I also just found out that Sanjay's name has come up.”

Authorities are now piecing together a timeline that grows darker with every development. A video, now verified by police, recently surfaced showing Raja and Sonam trekking in Nongriat just hours before his death — a moment that has gripped the public with eerie foreboding.

After the murder, Sonam reportedly fled Meghalaya, traveling through Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh before eventually surrendering in Ghazipur on June 9. Investigators grew suspicious after discovering Sonam’s mangalsutra and a ring abandoned in her trolley bag at a Sohra homestay.

“She left those items behind — a gesture that triggered immediate red flags,” said a senior police officer, adding that forensic teams were present during Tuesday’s reconstruction at the site where Raja’s body was dumped.

Police sources revealed that the accused were taken to a parking area above the gorge during the reenactment. “They demonstrated how Raja was lured and killed. It’s helping us understand the sequence of events leading to his final moments,” the officer added.

Meghalaya DGP I Nongrang confirmed that the case is being closely studied from “multiple angles.” She remarked on the strange timing of the crime: “It’s unusual. Within days of marriage, Sonam developed such hatred — it’s something we’re digging deeper into.”

“We’re confident,” she added, “that we have enough evidence, and we’re closing in on every loose end.”

Earlier, Superintendent of Police Syiem revealed that Sonam had confessed to plotting the murder. Initially, investigators believed she and her alleged lover Raj had hired contract killers. However, further probing revealed the three assailants were close friends of Raj — and had committed the murder as a “favor” to him.
