'No Party Flags, Leaders On Stage': All About Today's Mega Rally Reuniting Thackeray Brothers

The rally aims to unite Marathi speakers across party lines, focusing on shared cultural concerns, though some view it as politically motivated.

Raj Uddhav Thackeray Rally: In a rare display of unity, Maharashtra’s estranged political cousins, Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray, are set to share the stage on Saturday in Mumbai, coming together after 20 years over the cause of Marathi identity. In a state accustomed to shifting political tides, their joint appearance has triggered intense speculation over a new political alliance.

The immediate catalyst for their reunion is their shared opposition to the state government’s proposed Three-Language Formula, which both leaders vehemently rejected. Faced with mounting backlash, the Mahayuti government, including the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shinde faction of Shiv Sena, has since put the controversial plan on hold. Seizing this moment as a victory for Marathi solidarity, a celebratory rally, termed a “Vijay Sabha”, has been scheduled for 10 am at the NSCI Dome in the city's Worli area.

A Rally Beyond Party Lines

Organisers have urged participants not to bring any party flags, underscoring that this is a gathering for all Marathi enthusiasts, writers, poets, teachers, editors, and artists. Leaders from across political parties have been called upon to stand united on the issue of Marathi identity.

Inside the Vijay Sabha

  • Only party presidents, key leaders, or state chiefs from participating groups will join Raj and Uddhav Thackeray on stage.
  • The Worli Dome has seating arrangements for roughly 7,000 to 8,000 attendees.
  • LED screens will broadcast proceedings both inside and outside the hall, as well as along nearby roads.
  • The Dome’s basement offers parking for 800 vehicles.
  • An additional two-wheeler parking is available under the coastal road bridge facing the Dome.
  • Buses and larger vehicles will be accommodated at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse.

Over the past two decades, both Uddhav and Raj Thackeray have navigated a series of political ups and downs. Yet, with crucial municipal elections looming, many see this display of unity as less about Marathi pride and more about political survival. The ruling coalition has claimed that the Thackeray brothers’ rapprochement is driven by electoral strategy rather than linguistic concerns.

As the Vijay Sabha unfolds, all eyes remain fixed on whether this symbolic coming together might reshape Maharashtra’s political landscape once again.
