Pune: Truck Runs Over People Sleeping On Footpath; 2 Toddlers Among 3 Dead
A drunk truck driver ran over sleeping pedestrians, resulting in three fatalities -- including toddlers -- and six injuries in Pune.
Three people died while six others were injured after a dumper truck ran over them while they were sleeping on a footpath in Pune, said the police on Monday.
The incident took place at around 1 am on Monday when the driver, under the influence of alcohol, ran over people sleeping on a footpath in the Wagholi Chowk area of the city.
"Three people including two toddlers died and six others were injured after a dumper truck ran over them while they were sleeping on the footpath in Wagholi Chowk area of Pune city last night around 1 AM," said Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 4, Himmat Jadhav.
The driver who was under the influence of alcohol has been arrested under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and BNS for further investigation, he added.
In October, a delivery partner with a food aggregator app was killed after an Audi car rammed two bikes in a span of a few minutes in the city. The accused driver, a senior executive at a private firm, was detained after he fled following the accident.
A hit-and-run case in the city in May this year caused nationwide outrage after a speeding Porsche, driven by a minor, killed two IT professionals. Both the victims were flung into the air and landed on parked vehicles. While one of them died on the spot, the other one passed away during treatment.
What caused the public outrage the most was a 300-word essay on road safety that asked the accused to write as part of his bail conditions set by the Juvenile Justice Board.
People expressed their anger on social media partly because the accused was granted bail on lenient terms and also due to a police probe that revealed attempts made by his family and some doctors to cover up the crime.
