Nitish Kumar's Son To Be Bihar CM? JDU Leader Says 'Why Not'

Senior JD(U) leader Devesh Chandra Thakur on Sunday backed Bihar Health Minister Nishant Kumar as a potential future chief minister, saying he hoped the son of party president Nitish Kumar would follow in his father's footsteps and rise to the top post in the state.
Thakur made the remarks while speaking to reporters during Nishant Kumar's visit to Sitamarhi, where JD(U) workers welcomed the minister at several locations across the district.
When asked whether he viewed Nishant Kumar as a possible chief ministerial candidate in the future, Thakur said, "Why not? Politics is the art of the possible. May he rise to the greatest heights."
JD(U) workers accompanying the minister also expressed confidence in his leadership, saying Nitish Kumar's eventual withdrawal from active politics would not create a vacuum for the party.
Devesh Thakur Backs Nishant's Political Future
Praising Nitish Kumar's contribution to Bihar, Thakur said the former chief minister's two-decade tenure had been "unparalleled".
"Our leader, Nitish Kumar has done a lot for Bihar. His two-decade-long tenure as chief minister remains unparalleled. We hope that Nishant will follow in the footsteps of his father and win accolades in public life," he said.
Thakur, a former state minister and former chairman of the Bihar Legislative Council, was responding to questions from journalists.
Nishant Kumar Joined Politics This Year
Nishant Kumar, 45, entered active politics in March this year, shortly before Nitish Kumar announced his move towards the Rajya Sabha, bringing his roughly two-decade tenure as Bihar chief minister to an end.
Known for keeping a low profile, Nishant initially declined an offer to join the new Bihar government headed by BJP leader Samrat Choudhary as deputy chief minister. He later joined the Cabinet as a minister following pressure from JD(U) workers.
Asked about Nishant's performance as health minister, Thakur said it was too early to assess him.
"The young leader has just started off. It is rather childish to ask such a question at this juncture," he said.
Nishant Kumar Visits Sitamarhi
During his visit to Sitamarhi, Nishant Kumar said he was pleased to be in the place associated with Goddess Sita.
"I am thrilled to visit Sitamarhi, the place where Goddess Sita was believed to have been discovered. I pray to her that I live up to the expectations of the people and work for every section of society, be it women, OBCs or EBCs, just like my father had done," he told reporters.
The visit saw strong support from JD(U) workers, while Thakur's remarks added to speculation about Nishant Kumar's future role in Bihar politics.
