As many as 34 police personnel, including three DCPs, were injured in the Nagpur violence as stones were hurled at them. Around 50 persons have been taken into custody in connection with the violence.

Violence erupted in central Nagpur's Chitnis Park in Mahal area on Monday (March 17) around 7:30 PM after rumours spread that the holy book of a community was burnt during a protest by a right-wing body demanding the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.

As many as 34 police personnel, including three DCPs (deputy commissioners of police), were injured in the violence as stones were hurled at them. Several houses and vehicles were also vandalised.

More than 50 persons have been taken into custody by police in connection with the violence.

Here are the top updates on Nagpur violence:

  •  Curfew continues on the second day in 10 police station limits of Nagpur following violence that erupted on March 17.

  • Amid the ongoing row, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde questioned the "glorification of Aurangzeb", questioning his identity and calling him a "blot on our history". He further urged the people to maintain peace in the state and stated that police were investigating the incident, which he claimed was a "pre-planned conspiracy".

  • Police on Tuesday evening conducted a route march in riot-affected areas of central Nagpur with the police commissioner Ravinder Singal leading the contingent. He led the route march from Chitnis Park Chowk, the ground zero of violence a day before, to Hansapuri Road, where another clash had broken out in the night, via Bhaldarpura Chowk, Agrasen Chowk, Seva Sadan Chowk, and Geetanjali Talkies Chowk.

  • Earlier, curfew was imposed in areas under the jurisdiction of Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shanti Nagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imambada, Yashodhara Nagar and Kapil Nagar police stations, the city police said in a release on Tuesday.

  • Speaking in the legislative assembly on Tuesday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis claimed the Nagpur violence was "premeditated" and that the Vicky Kaushal-starrer film Chhaava, which was based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, reignited people's emotions against Aurangzeb and made them aware of the Maratha king's history.

  • Quick Response Teams and Riot Control Police teams were also stationed in  highly sensitive locations in the city to maintain law and order.
